Staff highlight: Toni O’Donnell

Welcome to another instalment of our Staff Highlight series. This time we caught up with Toni O’Donnell, our ECUBIC Administration Assistant about her role, her journey and what it’s like being part of the Business Station team.

What’s your role at Business Station?

I’m the Administration Assistant at the ECU Business and Innovation Centre (ECUBIC) in Joondalup, WA.

What led you to this?

A bit of a chance really. My previous job was very high pressure and repetitive. I was looking for a workplace where I could better use the admin skills that I’ve gained over many years. I’ve worked with Main Roads, WA Country Health and in the motor vehicle industry. As a bonus it’s a relatively short drive to work.

What’s your favourite part of your role at Business Station?

The team. From day one everyone has been so supportive, kind and helpful. Trevor (the ECUBIC Incubator Manager) is great to work with and I enjoy the interaction and conversation with the licensees that we have here at Joondalup. Also, it’s great when we have visitors out here like other staff or advisors.

What’s a key skill of yours in this role?

Being personable and approachable is always good, along with the willingness to give any new tasks a go.

What do you like about working with your team?

Trevor and I get on well so there’s never too many dull moments, and I’m always kept in the loop with any happenings out here. I enjoy working with Anne-Kit, Kasey and Stephanie, other Business Station incubator staff, when there are tasks to do, or I need some help. They’re always willing to lend a hand.

Career highlights?

The approval to start my Certificate III in Business. I have been wanting to do some formal training for a long time. It will be nice to add to my accomplishments.

Biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome professionally?

Working out a good work-life balance as a single mum. Working full time and being a mum full time has its challenges.

What are you looking to achieve in the next 6 months?

Completing at least half of my cert 3 and taking on more challenging roles. Also, getting out of my comfort zone and trying new things.

What are your passions/hobbies outside of work?

I have a 10-year-old daughter, Tayla. We like to hang out on the weekends. We love op shopping, markets, movies, and shopping in general. We’ve recently taken up macrame and making jewellery to maybe sell once we get the hang of it.

Stay tuned for the next staff highlight to learn more about the talented people who make up our team!
